A Three Hour Tour: Iceland by Helicopter by Jeff Clay

In August Board Member Jeff Clay had an 8 hour layover in Iceland en route to a week trip to Greenland. Rather than sitting in the airport he and his companions opted to hire a helicopter for an aerial tour of the southwest part of the island. Music by Stellardrone.

Africa Slideshow by Greg Smith

In March of this year Board Director Greg Smith went on a two week Africa tour that included 9 days of safari in the Kalahari desert and Okavango Delta regions of Botswana. This is an 8-minute version of a 23 minute travelogue slideshow of that trip. The video was compiled and rendered using Adobe Photoshop.

Costa Rica Photo Tour by Cindy Costa

In July 2023, Newsletter Director Cindy Costa participated in an 8-day photo tour along the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. The Osa Peninsula is located in the South Pacific area of Costa Rica and is known as one of the most remote destinations in Costa Rica and the whole of Central America.

The tour leader, Jeff Cable, was highly recommended by a friend of hers from her California camera club days. In addition to wanting to experience the beauty of Costa Rica and the many species of wildlife she hoped to see, the other motivating factor for selecting this tour was that participants stayed in a resort that had a number of rainforest species a short walk from their rooms. From San JosÃ© (the capital of Costa Rica) the group traveled to the peninsula in single-prop 12-seater planes. While on the peninsula, they traveled in vans with the tour leader and local guides to areas that were known for various species of wildlife. In addition to the days spent in the rainforest, they spent a day on the bay photographing dolphins and whales, a day on the Sierpe River, and another doing macro photography with frogs, snakes and lizards.

The slideshow is 5 1/2 minutes long and set to an instrumental piano solo called “Early Morning Range” by George Winston. We hope you enjoy the slideshow as much as Cindy enjoyed photographing the incredible wildlife of the Osa Peninsula.

Arabian Sands

Camera Club Board Chair Jeff Clay traveled to Oman in October of 2022 and spent 4 nights and 5 days in the desert sands of that Arabian Peninsula country. Set to Arabian style music, this is a 12 and a half minute chronological journey to those distant sands. First, he camped in the sprawling Wahiba Sands region, then drove to the coast and then south to the white “Sugar Dunes” of Al Khaluf. The last two nights were spent in the southern, Omani section of the of the vast Rub’ al Khali, the known as the Empty Quarter and more simply to the local bedouins as “The Sands.”

A Celestial Journey

Set to the music of Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” you will see images captured of the earth, moon, planets and distant stars, nebulae and galaxies using equipment as basic as a DSLR and tripod and sophisticated star-tracking telescopes with dedicated astro-cameras. Enjoy the voyage!

A Brush with Burma by Jeff Clay

In 2017 long-time club member Jeff Clay took a 14 day photo tour, run by renowned travel photographer Nathan Horton, of the once — and yet again — isolated country of Burma, currently known as Myanmar. It was a fantastic trip with many opportunities to photograph not only legendary sites but also the wonderfully warm people of the country. For a small country it has many cultures, languages, foods and history. In other words: diversity abounds! Jeff presented several years ago a slide show of his trip and since turned that into a movie complete with traditional music. ပျော်မွေ့! (Enjoy!)

Cuban Travelogue by John Nellist

At the end of a trip have you ever wondered how to share your images with your friends? One option is to prepare a short video with accompanying music. Back in 2019 the club treasurer, John Nellist, participated in a cultural tour of Cuba with his wife’s Karen alumni travel program at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, OR. Though the focus of the tour was to provide an insight into the culture, history and music of Cuba, there were still opportunities for photography. Being an avid photographer, John took many images and the other trip participants wanted to see them. Distributing a link to a portfolio is always one option, but John decided to prepare the attached video with accompanying music from one of the bands they had seen playing in Havana. There are now many software products available for preparing these videos, but for simplicity John used the Slideshow module within Lightroom which allows the addition of music and creation of title pages during the sequence of images. The video was well received by all the other trip participants and is now being used by the tour operator to promote this cultural tour in the future.
